We had not done a long road trip in the US since our Alaska trip in
2007, so 2010 was the year for another one. This time the plan
was to drive the Pacific Coast Highway from Los Angeles as far north as
time allowed. So we set off in May from our house in Florida in
our trusty Subaru. We spent a night in New Orleans, then headed
across Texas to New Mexico. After a slight detour to revisit the
Grand Canyon (while we were in the neighborhood, so to speak), we spent
a night in Las Vegas, then headed into California. We met the
Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica pier, and turned right. The Pacific
Coast was spectacular as advertised. We kept going to the redwood
forests in the north of California, and on into Oregon. We
detoured inland to see Crater Lake in Oregon, and struck lucky with the
weather there, although much of the park was still closed by snow. We
followed the coast north to the mouth of the Columbia River, and then
it was time to head home, across Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska and
Arkansas, back to Florida.
